ANTIQUE MIRROR GLASS PROJECTS AND APPLICATIONS
One of the most dramatic approaches to the use of antique mirror glass is to clad an entire wall with it..
This can generate an almost sculptural effect in terms of altering and manipulating the quality of space. Variations in the way that the panels of mirror are organised and the degree to which they are antiqued offer a huge range of possibilities to explore.
Dividing the wall into horizontal panels emphasises the width of the space and vertical panels. The height and the proportions chosen for these panels will determine the degree of the effect.
Lots to play with and they look stunning!
Feature walls, however, do require a professional survey and installation. Most walls are not truly flat or square and variations in the wall surface are highlighted by reflections.
A professional survey and installation will ensure that everything fits and that any discrepancies in the levels of the wall are padded out before the mirrors are glued to the surface.
Antique mirror glass creates a very attractive feature in kitchens and bathrooms. Typically splashbacks are toughened, particularly if positioned right next to a heat source.
Antique mirror glass creates a very attractive feature in kitchens and bathrooms. Aesthetically it works well with both traditional and contemporary kitchens for splashbacks, and its ability to hide splash-marks helps on a practical level too.
Original Vintage - Panels Typically splashbacks are toughened, particularly if positioned right next to a heat source like an Aga or gas hob. In a bathroom toughening is often essential as a breakage on to a tiled floor could cause injury.
However, in a kitchen, provided the heat source is at least 200mm from the mirror, and no pan can rest directly on the glass while on the hob, then toughening is not required. Equally, if cut-outs are required for sockets or switches, then provided they are more than 50mm from the edge of the glass (or another socket), then toughening should not be required.
If you are in doubt about the toughening options (which may determine your choice of style), we recommend you take some photos of the area in question and forward them through to us and we can provide some advice.
For some styles we can offer lengths of up to 3 metres (provided the height is no more than 1 metre), but sometimes long lengths are best divided into 3 panels for both aesthetic and practical requirements, especially in relation to access and installation.
